罗穆卢斯-奥古斯都是奥雷斯的儿子,他曾是匈奴人阿提拉的助手,有时被派往君士坦丁堡进行外交访问。 阿提拉死后,奥雷斯加入了西方帝国的服务,并很快取得了高级职位。 公元474年,皇帝朱利叶斯-尼波斯任命他为 "士兵的主人",并将他提升为贵族等级。

罗慕路斯-奥古斯都,罗马的最后一位皇帝,在他自己的时代就已经是一个被嘲笑的目标。 因为他的名字就会招致嘲笑。 罗慕路斯是罗马传说中的第一位国王,而奥古斯都是罗马光荣的第一位皇帝。

因此,他的名字有时会被改变,以反映公众对他的不尊重。 罗穆卢斯 "被改为Momyllus,意思是 "小耻辱"。 而 "奥古斯都 "被变成 "奥古斯都",意思是 "小奥古斯都 "或 "小皇帝"。 正是后一个版本在历史上一直伴随着他,今天许多历史学家仍然把他称为罗穆卢斯-奥古斯都。

但在罗慕路斯登基后仅10个月,就发生了严重的军队哗变。 闹事的原因是,在西部帝国的其他地区,地主们不得不将他们多达三分之二的财产交给帝国内的盟友德国人占有。

但这一政策从未在意大利实行过。 奥瑞斯提斯起初曾承诺,如果德国士兵帮助他废黜朱利叶斯-内波斯,他就向他们提供这种土地。 但一旦完成了这一任务,他就选择忘记这种让步。

但德国军队不愿意让这个问题被遗忘,他们要求得到 "他们的 "三分之一的土地。 领导他们抗议的人是奥雷斯特自己的高级军官之一,弗拉维乌斯-奥多亚克(奥多瓦卡)。

面对如此大规模的叛变,奥雷斯特撤到了提契诺姆(帕维亚)城坚固的城墙后面。 但这次叛变并非昙花一现,提契诺姆被围困、攻陷并被洗劫一空。 奥雷斯特被带到普拉琴察(皮亚琴察),于公元476年8月被处决。

奥瑞斯提斯的弟弟(保罗)不久后在拉文纳附近的战斗中被杀。

此后,奥多亚克攻占了拉文纳城,迫使罗穆卢斯于公元476年9月4日退位。 被废黜的皇帝退居坎帕尼亚的米塞努姆(Misenum)宫殿,每年领取六千英镑的养老金。 他的死亡日期不明。 尽管有些说法表明,他可能在公元507-11年还活着。
