罗穆卢斯-奥古斯都是奥雷斯的儿子，他曾是匈奴人阿提拉的助手，有时被派往君士坦丁堡进行外交访问。 阿提拉死后，奥雷斯加入了西方帝国的服务，并很快取得了高级职位。 公元474年，皇帝朱利叶斯-尼波斯任命他为 "士兵的主人"，并将他提升为贵族等级。

奥瑞斯提斯的弟弟（保罗）不久后在拉文纳附近的战斗中被杀。
此后，奥多亚克攻占了拉文纳城，迫使罗穆卢斯于公元476年9月4日退位。 被废黜的皇帝退居坎帕尼亚的米塞努姆（Misenum）宫殿，每年领取六千英镑的养老金。 他的死亡日期不明。 尽管有些说法表明，他可能在公元507-11年还活着。
