马库斯-克洛迪乌斯-普比纽斯-马克西姆斯

普皮纽斯现在离开罗马，率领军队北上对抗马克西米努斯，而巴尔比努斯则留在首都。 但为普皮纽斯和他的部队准备的战斗却没有发生。 两位参议员克里斯皮努斯和梅诺菲勒斯在阿奎利亚反抗马克西米努斯和他饥饿的军队，成功击退了他攻城的企图。 而马克西米努斯的军队则叛变了，杀死了他们的领袖和他儿子。
与此同时，回到罗马的巴尔比努斯遇到了严重的危机，两名参议员加里卡努斯和梅塞纳斯杀死了一群进入元老院的禁卫军。 被激怒的禁卫军寻求报复。 加里卡努斯参议员甚至自己组建了一支由角斗士组成的部队来击退这些禁卫军。 巴尔比努斯拼命想控制住局势，但没有成功。在这种混乱的情况下，一场火灾发生了，造成了巨大的损失。
普比纽斯的回归本应使局势平静下来，但这只是非常短暂的。 现在两位皇帝之间开始出现裂痕。 巴尔比纽斯的地位在首都发生的混乱中受到了极大的影响，他的同事凯旋而归使他感到受到威胁。
然而，他们却开始制定打击野蛮人的计划。 巴尔比努斯将在多瑙河上与哥特人作战，普比努斯将把战争推向波斯人。
但这种幻想的计划应该全部落空。 燎原人仍然对最近在罗马发生的事情感到愤怒，现在把普比纽斯的私人德国保镖看作是对他们自己作为罗马守卫者地位的威胁。 五月初，在卡皮托林运动会结束时，他们对宫殿采取行动。
现在，两位皇帝之间的裂痕比以往任何时候都要明显，他们在争吵的同时，禁卫军也在向他们逼近。 因为在这个关键时刻，巴尔比努斯不想使用德国保镖，因为他认为这不仅会抵挡住禁卫军，还会废掉他。
事实证明，他们没有能力相互信任是致命的。
禁卫军不顾一切地进入皇宫，抓住了两位皇帝，剥光了他们的衣服，并把他们赤身裸体地拖到了他们的营地。 当他们得到消息说德国保镖正在去救这两个无助的俘虏的路上时，禁卫军屠杀了他们，把尸体留在街上，向他们的营地走去。
这两位皇帝在位99天。
